Marimekko s/s 13, The Art of Printmaking - Colour for a Reason

This season there was no Marimekko fashion show in Helsinki, instead it was held at New York fashion week – the fact that we are all so proud of!! Couple of days later, Helsinki crowd gathered to a movie theatre, where the NY debut was shown on the big screen. There was a lot of colour and prints– the core of Marimekko. Models took to the runway barefoot or sporting some Marimekko print Converse, smiling; the casting was also interesting as it showed a variety of different models.

Marimekko a/w 12 Fashion Show

Marimekko autumn/winter 2012 clothes, bags and accessories collection was revealed on Thursday at a fashion show in Katajanokka’s old customs house. Before the show started, the managing director Mika Ihamuotila told a bit more about the motif, which was like with the interior collection; off to the woods. He was talking about how we Finns maybe don’t appreciate the nature that so often starts right from our doorstep, quite as much as we should. The citizens of New York, London and Tokyo were used as a comparison, whom have to settle for a park or maybe a spa to get away from the hectic city. As a former Londoner, I could totally relate to this. What comes to the show, I especially liked the loose-fitting woollen coats designed by Tuula Pöyhönen. There were lots of colourful sock and tights as well as wood & resin jewellery that reminded me of some old Marni ones I have, but then again as it was my workplace for so many years, I always see 'Marni' everywhere...

Marimekko spring/summer 2012

“The fragrance of spring’s first flowers. The sounds of arrival and departure in the busy port. The colourful market, alive with smiling people, fresh vegetables, fish, seagulls. Long, leisurely hours spent with friends in cafés, parks, the nearby islands. Bike rides to the allotment garden to witness the miracle of growth.”

I love going to the Marimekko shows because they always make an effort with the set design, no exception this time as it featured barefoot models on a water-covered runway. Collection was presented at the Caple Factory yesterday and it was based on moments of life in Helsinki. After the show the guests were shown to the separately build area with cosy tables&chairs and lights hanging from the ceiling. Marimekko fabrics, prints and crockery were strongly present as traditional Finnish bun and drinks were served.
