Diesel & Heikki Salonen – the beginning of a new era

Yesterday I was excited to see the first full collection that the newly appointed Head of Design Heikki Salonen with his team has designed for Diesel’s spring/summer 2012 season! At the same time the whole Diesel womenswear brand has been relaunched and is getting a slightly more grown-up and softer aesthetic.
The denim line has been reduced to six styles (available in several washes) and completely redesigned. They include a high waisted & 50’s inspired Highkee (which apparently is how the Italians pronounce the Finn Heikki’s name), Myguy boyfriend style and skinnies that have a higher back so you can actually bend down comfortably.
Traces of the former Fashion East and NEWGEN designer Salonen’s style can definitely be seen in the menswear influenced shirts, prints, shorts, sheer fabrics and in a certain long dress with leather detailing. Meanwhile there was so much more: shoes, great rucksacks and so on but having only gotten two hours of sleep the night before, I was going around like some mad lady and couldn’t get my head around for the half of it...

Filippa K flagship store opening

Yesterday I popped in at the new Filippa K flagship store grand opening. The store (that stocks women's clothes, shoes and accessories) opened for public as of today at the Kämp Galleria in Mikonkatu, Helsinki! Lots of lovely pieces there, I can tell you, minimalistic and timeless yet very contemporary & stylish  – well worth a visit! My personal favourites included a hand knitted, off-white jumper with details at the front and a light beige, simple and oh so practical beanie – both in 100% wool. Might have to go back for those, I reckon! Company that lists its values as style, simplicity and quality will be a welcome addition to the Helsinki's shopping scene!

Going to start using this wallet straight away, it is a perfect size! Most wallets are just too big for my small handbags and I always find myself going back to use these iffy Marni cloth bags, which I have tons of. This is going to be a slightly more elegant and grown-up version!

Marimekko spring/summer 2012

“The fragrance of spring’s first flowers. The sounds of arrival and departure in the busy port. The colourful market, alive with smiling people, fresh vegetables, fish, seagulls. Long, leisurely hours spent with friends in cafés, parks, the nearby islands. Bike rides to the allotment garden to witness the miracle of growth.”

I love going to the Marimekko shows because they always make an effort with the set design, no exception this time as it featured barefoot models on a water-covered runway. Collection was presented at the Caple Factory yesterday and it was based on moments of life in Helsinki. After the show the guests were shown to the separately build area with cosy tables&chairs and lights hanging from the ceiling. Marimekko fabrics, prints and crockery were strongly present as traditional Finnish bun and drinks were served.

Cooper & Gorfer

“...from the dream like parallel world of the Pre-Raphaelites, to the startling juxtapositions and suggestive manner of Surrealism”

Artist duo Cooper & Gorfer consists of American Sarah Cooper (1974) and Austrian Nina Gorfer (1979). Their photography exists at the intersection of contemporary photography and 18th and 19th century painting, relying on post-production techniques such as drawing, painting, collage making and Photoshop. They tell of their work: “Place and story are the catalysts of our work – transforming narrative and memories into image.” I say: A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Breakfast with Vincent Gallo (well, kind of)

A couple of weeks back I got an invitation to my email with a picture of Vincent Gallo, I didn’t really need any more information to rsvp, but turns out it was from G-Star RAW kindly inviting me to a press brunch and to check out their new autumn/winter 11 collection (in store NOW)! Artist, actor, filmmaker, musician Gallo is featuring as the new face for their menswear collection. So enjoying a superfood smoothie, I got a thorough introduction of the collection, the brand and the store which ended by us gazing at the huge poster of Gallo on the window. I can't think of many better ways to start the day!

Jean Paul Gaultier by Mikli

” because there was the one, because there was the other...”

” The one reinvented the sailor’s outfit, the other reinvented specs: their paths have finally come together, and they have wed - a fantastic union.”

I had the honour to meet the Monsieur Alain Mikli himself on a rainy Thursday afternoon at the Alain Mikli store in Helsinki, where he introduced his brand new collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier. He seemed like a fascinating character and like a true artist, talking with his French accent and sipping red wine. Questions like: ”How many models are in this collection?” was answered with comic: “I have no idea!” Luckily the lovely pr lady had done her homework and we soon found out that it in fact consists of 20 models (both specs and sunglasses), prices ranging from about 219-320 € and available now!
